It’s Not Easy Being The Most Optimistic Guy In The World About Online Advertising

Posted: February 13, 2006 in Uncategorized
I am still — as advertised — the most optimistic guy in the world about online advertising.
But, sometimes it’s tough.
Whether I like it or not, that puts me in the, "you idiot!  GOOG has gotten creamed in the last few weeks!" camp.
So has YHOO.  Only MSFT has held its ground.
Truth is, stock price isn’t always indicative of performance — remember my favorite investing phrase:  The market is always wrong in the short-term… and always right in the long.
Take GOOG:  Regardless of the way the stock performed over the last few weeks, GOOG had a quarter that any company would kill for.  It was spectacular.
YHOO’s 40% performance was pretty darn good, too.
So — regardless of GOOG and YHOO stock gyrations — online advertising continues to make dramatic gains relative to offline offerings… and will for the foreseeable future.
There just never seems to be a dull moment in this revolution, eh?
P.S  With all the negative press lately, thought it might be helpful to share a positive GOOG comment:  Here’s a piece from Andy Swan of

You are optimisim, I looked it up and saw your picture in the on-line dictionary.  Has the world changed recently, 15 years ago I used Mainframe Cad and MRP,  remember  VM/VMS? Just five years prior Mac\’s were office decorations to show wealth, and that you were serious about technology in the office for your company\’s future.  No really we used them to write bills of material. Sure seemed like decorations at the time but caused the "desktop" to mean something entirely different  and its people like you who drive these changes.
Seperate the market by two divisions for a second, value growth and dividend growth, think about Amazon, grew like hell, didn\’t make a profit, people still bought because it still grew like hell.
MSFT will be around for a long time so will GOOG Why the drop on GOOG? Don\’t ask me.  MSFT is more diversified, makes it stable? Who Knows?!

<smile>… only way to describe it:  Always wrong in short-term… and always right in long.

Did you go see Bill G\’s talk the other day?
I just noted it on the news and wondered if you were there.

Nah… just got off the phone with BillG\’s best friend, though… the world\’s truly only separated by one degree, eh?
